Chip repair or full replacement? How to tell.

Most chips can be repaired in under an hour, often at no cost to you through insurance. Here is the honest line between a repair and a replacement.

A rock chip is one of the few car problems where acting fast genuinely saves you money. Caught early, most chips are repairable. Ignored, heat and vibration turn them into cracks that mean a full replacement.

When a repair does the job

  • The chip is smaller than a dollar bill
  • It is not directly in the driver's primary line of sight
  • It has not spread into long cracks reaching the edge of the glass
  • The damage only affects the outer layer of the glass

Why repair is often free with insurance

Texas allows insurers to waive your deductible for windshield repair, because a small repair now saves them a full replacement claim later. That is why most of our chip repairs cost our insured customers nothing. This waiver applies to repair, not replacement.

When replacement is the honest answer

Cracks longer than a few inches, damage at the edge of the glass, or a chip directly in your line of sight mean replacement. Modern windshields also carry the cameras your safety systems rely on, which is why a proper replacement includes recalibration.
